How we review
Every rating on this site is earned the same way and decided by the same people who write the review. Here's exactly how, including when we've cooked with a product ourselves and when we haven't.
Two kinds of review, always labeled
Not every gluten-free product gets cooked in our kitchen before we write about it, and pretending otherwise would be the opposite of the honesty this site is built on. So every review carries a label at the top telling you which kind it is:
Hands-on. We bought the product and used it ourselves. We cooked it, tasted it, tried it in the ways people actually use it, and lived with the leftovers. When a review is labeled hands-on, the first-person experience in it is real.
Research-based. We build these from verified buyer reviews, community reports from celiac and gluten-free forums, published lab and certification data, and the manufacturer's own specs. We read widely and check the facts, but we don't personally cook with the product. These reviews lead with what the evidence consistently shows, not invented kitchen scenes. They're clearly marked so you always know the difference.
Both are held to the same standard for accuracy. When comparing a product to a named competitor helps you decide, we do it; when there's no natural rival, we don't force it. The label just tells you where the experience came from.
What we verify on every review
Regardless of type, before a review publishes we confirm the nutrition panel against a current package, check certification status directly with the issuing body (GFCO, Non-GMO Project, USDA Organic, and others), and check for active recalls or reformulations. Gluten-free status can change without notice, so we note the date we verified, and we tell you to confirm the label yourself before you trust a product with your health.
How the rating is calculated
Our editorial rating is a weighted score out of 5, not a gut feeling:
- Taste & texture (40%). The thing you care about most. Is it good on its own, or only "good for gluten-free"?
- Value vs. alternatives (20%). Price measured against the gluten-free and, where relevant, the conventional competition.
- Ingredient honesty & nutrition (20%). Short, real ingredient lists and honest nutrition.
- Availability & packaging (10%). Can you actually find it, and does the package tell the truth?
- Versatility (10%). How many real situations it works in.
A 5.0 is rare. We save it for products that beat their wheat-based peers, not for showing up. A 2.5-star review is written in exactly the same tone as a 4.5: calm, specific, and honest about who the product is and isn't for.
When readers take over the rating
Once a product has three or more verified reader reviews, the star rating on its page switches from our editorial score to the reader-driven average. What happens in your own kitchen outweighs any single writer's take. Leave a review after you try something, and we read every one. Fake or paid reviews are removed.
Independence
Editorial ratings are not for sale. No brand gets approval over our content, our scores, or our verdicts. We earn affiliate commissions when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you, but a commission has never moved a rating, and it never will. Sponsored content, if we ever run it, is a separate thing, clearly labeled as such. Full disclosure here.
